Central Florida Fair Market Lamb Program
The Central Florida Fair Sheep Shows are designed to provide educational opportunities to youth of
Central Florida. The intent of the Youth Market Lamb Show and Sale is to promote Youth
Development and Florida agricultural venues through the raising of market lambs in Central Florida.
The program is designed to teach the skills of market lamb growth and selection by understanding
Performance, Muscling, Finish, and Usefulness to the industry. Each lamb is scored by using a
systematic approach to learning. Market lambs should approach a Finish Grade of Choice #1 (.15-.20
fat), an Average Daily Gain greater than .50 lbs., a High Value to the Industry in Structure and
Balance, Trimness, Frame and Weight, a market lamb that is free from defects, and is extremely
muscular. The Market Lamb program consists of two divisions. A wool bred division and a cultural
(hair) division.
Market Sale was April 27th, 2008 at the Central Florida Fair Livestock
Pavilion. The Average price per pound: $3.81
Market Lamb exhibitor spend between $300 and $500 to participate in the
Market Lamb Program. Youth pay between $100 and $200 per lamb at the start of their
project in January. They spend between between $200 and $300 per lamb for feed.
Buyers and supporters need to be prepared to pay between $5.00 and $7.00 per pound during the sale
in order to provide the needed dollars to cover the cost of the project and provide profits toward the
students educational endeavors.
